New accordionist: JOOST VAN SON
added: 10 July 2011, category: musicians
Shtetl Band Amsterdam is happy to announce that we have found a great accordionist: Joost van Son.
He is best known as the founder and accordion player of the group La Strada. Since decades he has been playing world music like Rumanian, Transylvanian and Brazilian music. He has also been playing lots of music for theater and films.
From now on, Joost will perform at the concerts of Shtetl Band Amsterdam. We have noticed that he is a really a band player. That makes him fit in very well with our band sound, where the collective is just as important as the individuals.
We welcome Joost, and we thank Sanne Möricke from Berlijn, who, as a semi-permanent sub, has played so many beautiful concerts with us!
New CD: THE KLEZMER VILLAGE, with master clarinetist Christian Dawid
added: 03 Feb 2011, category: CD
The CD The Klezmer Village, released by Chamsa Records in February 2011.
A gorgeous mix of very old melodies and new compositions. Newly rediscoverd tunes are heard for the first time in 90 years and well known klezmer classics are played with that deep and energetic village sound. New compositions by Gregor Schaefer, Bert Vos en Christian Dawid blend in seamlessly.
The music on the resulting CD displays a wide range of emotions, in varied concert suites. The joy of playing the music and making variations makes sure that the musicains' mastery of the style never becomes academic. Indeed the mastery, the joy and the variations give an enormous depth to this Jewish music -- a depth that so far was unheard in this part of the world.
